Western Diet Linked to Increased Psoriasis – Not Just Obesity
The “Western Diet” has really made a name for itself. Essentially, when we hear this term we immediately think the same thing – junk food. So when “Western Diet” and “Psoriasis” appear in the same news heading – it probably ain’t going to be a good news story!
A 2020 study found that short term exposure to a Western Diet (that means high fat and sugar) resulted in increased production of inflammatory chemicals and psoriasis lesions. I repeat, short term!
So, that old saying of “diet has nothing to do with it” (we’ve all been told this once or twice), well that can officially be thrown out with the bath water.
Turns out your gut feeling that diet and nutrition affects your skin health was right after all! And according to this study, it is the saturated fatty acids we need to look out for. These are typically found in animal products (meat, dairy, eggs) as well as processed foods (chips, chocolate, pastries etc). If it tastes amazing – check the fat content! The interesting part is the liver really plays a key role in the inflammatory process. The study describes that it is the extra burden on the liver to produce bile acids with every fatty meal that is linked to the increase in skin inflammation. Good thing that we are ahead of the curve at Soratinex and our Oral Supplement is rich in liver-protective phytochemicals.
The other finding showed that drugs which eliminated bile through the bowels, also effectively reduced inflammation. This means healthy bowel motions are also key (think fibre, water, exercise and delicious green smoothies).
So what does this mean for the keto dieters among us? Our take at Soratinex is that you may be better off with a low fat, high fibre approach to weight loss instead. You could always start with Meat Free Monday and go from there!
