If psoriasis is genetic – what good can a cream really do?
We know a great deal more about psoriasis now than what we did just a few years ago. For example, we know that psoriasis is not just simply a ‘skin disease’ but a condition which is driven by our genes and our environment. So, if the science shows us that stress, diet and infection can trigger psoriasis – what good is a cream really going to do?
That is an excellent question! I’m glad you asked.
Firstly, if we are to look back at our medical ancestors and traditional practices such as Ayurvedic medicine – psoriasis was treated from both the inside and the out. Herbal oils and natural therapeutics were applied to the skin, whilst a combination of diet and herbal/nutritional medicines were taken to help balance internal triggers.
There is a lesson to be learned from these ancient practices and that lesson is this;
Outside-in – The skin is our largest organ and also the most exposed to our environment. Unfortunately, our environment is not always the healthiest and therefore our skin can come into contact with multiple skin damaging irritants such as strong UV rays, pollution, household chemicals and nasty microbes – to name a few
A positive (and negative) feature of psoriasis, is that the damage caused by these irritants is easy to spot – typically in the form of psoriasis plaques. The benefit of this being, you can apply a treatment directly to the area that needs help. Internal treatments can take much longer to get to the area and may end up not getting there at all, depending on the treatment used.
A psoriasis cream that works should contain properties that not only help to repair the damaged and inflamed skin, but also help to protect it with antioxidants and nourishing oils, to help keep the skin barrier strong and prevent further flaring in the future.
Inside-Out – Whilst it is helpful to apply a psoriasis cream that works directly on the affected skin, it is equally as important to support our insides. Just like the skin, our insides are also exposed to some nasties, usually in the form of junk food, alcohol and an unhealthy gut microbiome. Clearly the best thing to do here is eat a healthy, balanced diet. But let’s face it; we all fall off track every now and then.
That’s where an oral supplement can come in handy, by providing our insides with a bit of extra support. Herbs which balance stress, are rich in antioxidants and keep our microbiome and blood sugar in check – can be very useful when it comes to psoriasis.
This is why Soratinex included a traditional Ayurvedic remedy known as Triphala in its Oral Supplement formula.
